The Search for True Healing and What Your Doctor May Not Know

Many families, ours included, have learned the hard way there are gaps in treating chronic illness. In those gaps lies the secret to healing. Few families, however, figure this out because they are being told by those they trust (the doctors) that there is nothing else they can do. These doctors aren’t purposely misleading patients; they are just unaware. It’s also easier to be ignorant than informed when your livelihood benefits from a lack of knowledge.

We were fortunate! A career in pharmaceutical sales has given me a look behind the curtain, ONE I WISH EVERYONE COULD HAVE. This look behind the curtain has allowed me to question everything and make the right decisions for my family. So, here is a little peek, with the intention that it inspires you to ask lots of questions and view everything with a discerning eye.

Over the last two decades, I have watched the medical system change dramatically. Many things are contributing to the unraveling of patient care. The system is overburdened, and most doctors no longer have the time needed to stay current with research. There are very few who can claim to be caring, compassionate physicians, medical detectives, and savvy business owners. Without this combination, it is hard to maintain a successful practice and even harder to get patients well. Ever-increasing liability insurance, the squeeze on reimbursements, and time spent fighting with patient’s insurance plans over approvals (for medications & procedures) all impact the practice’s ability to operate at a profit. Furthermore, in most urban areas, hospital systems are buying up the small practices and running them like hospitals which cuts care, compassion, and time spent with patients. While many doctors may have been inspired to help others, they didn’t go to Medical School to be broke, so they do what helps keep them in “practice.”

Most of the doctors I know have to see a minimum of forty to sixty patients a day to stay profitable. How many doctors want to go home and do research after that??
So, where do many of these doctors get their current information? From their pharmaceutical reps or conferences (if they even attend conferences anymore). Both, of course, are an education in medication utilization by big pharma (which is better than NO current data), but how does this type of schooling fill those GAPS in treatment? It doesn’t! A doctor would need to read and research on their own to discover what these GAPS in treatment are and how to meet them. If the medical model doesn’t reward physicians for doing this extra work, and instead makes it difficult, what is their motivation? Many of us believe that our doctors want us to be HEALTHY and are willing to DO WHAT IT TAKES to help us achieve that health. IT IS MORE ACCURATE TO SAY THAT OUR DOCTORS (NOT ALL, BUT MOST) WANT US TO DO WHAT THEY WERE TAUGHT AND TELL US TO DO.

Throughout my career, I have met many caring, compassionate physicians who felt the calling to help people. I have also encountered MORE THAN A FEW APATHETIC, LAZY physicians who actually disclosed that they based their decisions on what was easiest for them (& some who did not admit this, but it was evident in how they practiced.) It is possible that the medical system and increasingly sick patients’ demands have worn those doctors down. Either way, HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE DOCTORS? HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE A GREAT DOCTOR? HOW WOULD YOU KNOW IF YOUR DOCTOR’S SUGGESTIONS BENEFIT THEM OR YOU?

The search for WHY someone is CHRONICALLY ILL IS FAR HARDER THAN MEDICATING THE SYMPTOMS OF THAT ILLNESS. Ultimately, more than one cause contributes to chronic illness, so ONE treatment being the answer is unusual. Mainstream medicine will prescribe medications, then optimize or change them, or add additional medications. Occasionally, walking, movement, or eating better are advised, depending upon the doctor and the diagnosis. More often than not, this is never discussed.

So, what are some of the crucial elements of a healing plan? What are the GAPS in treating chronic illness? What should our physicians be well-versed in?

DIET – What we eat SHOULD BE a conversation that all doctors are well-versed in. Food is information for our cells. To think that this does not impact our health in a significant way is short-sighted. A few short hours on this topic in medical school is either a GROSS OVERSIGHT or ABSOLUTELY INTENTIONAL. Either way, it is an area that must be addressed and SHOULD NOT BE IGNORED. WE HAVE FALLEN INTO A CONVENIENCE TRAP, and the food that we eat & feed our children is often inflammatory and filled with additives and toxic chemicals & antibiotics. Diet is the first area that needs to be addressed to heal.

NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES- Many of us (Docs included) are completely unaware that even when we eat the healthiest of diets, we are typically deficient in many different minerals and vitamins. This is mainly due to over-farming and lack of regenerative farming methods. Our soil no longer has the same mineral content it once did, and in turn, our food doesn’t either. So how could we be getting enough? Especially when even those who eat healthy still don’t get enough veggies, or we cook them in a way that reduces their benefits.

ENVIRONMENT- Even with some of the best integrative doctors, I have seen this area overlooked in some significant ways! You can do many things to address your health issues, but if you live in a “sick” environment, you will continue to stay stagnant or backslide as soon as you ease off a protocol.

The following are a few ways to make our homes a healing oasis instead of the TOXIC SOUP it could potentially be:

MOLD is so common and prevalent. If you or a family member are chronically ill, you should test and address it. Mold is a much deeper topic that requires expert help as even those who claim to be Mold Remediators have NO CLUE just what this involves. ( I will cover this in DETAIL IN another blog).

CHEMICALS are so pervasive, and we are inundated in so many ways. The paint on our walls, the furniture we buy, our carpets, and our cleaning products contribute to our indoor air quality.

EMF(Dirty Electricity, WIFI, RADIATION) This tends to be hard for people to make peace with. However, this is a significant contributor to illness, and there is a TON OF RESEARCH proving it. If you have WIFI in the house – make sure it is far away from your living and sleeping spaces & turn it off at night.

PESTICIDES- BETTER TO HAVE AN UGLY LAWN than to have your family playing on carcinogenic chemicals.

DETOXIFICATION- This is how we rid the body of these environmental toxins and internal pathogens, metals, etc.- it is important to note that many “done for you detoxes” will not bring about the kind of long-term healing we are discussing. You want a plan that focuses on your biochemistry and health challenges. Drainage should always be addressed first, or you will recycle those toxins.

MICROBIOME – Many things impact our microbiome, and recent research has linked the microbiome to a plethora of illnesses and conditions including anxiety, autism, diabetes, and inflammation. Overlooking this critical component of our health is a tragic mistake that most mainstream doctors make because they are not yet up-to-date on current research. That said, the goal is to rebalance our microbiome, to improve the terrain, thus making ourselves more resilient.

MENTAL/ EMOTIONAL/ENERGETIC-
This is another area that can be overlooked by some integrative and holistic physicians, too. It is our energy that influences our biochemistry. If this seems crazy to you now, that’s ok. Eventually, it all begins to make sense. We cannot heal our bodies in a toxic environment, and that environment can be our thoughts too! Every healing plan needs a GET HAPPY PLAN. Meditation was a real game-changer for our family, but we have done so much more than just that, all in the name of true healing.

Although there are other things our doctors should be familiar with, such as our MITOCHONDRIA & METHYLATION, this discussion is not meant to be an exhaustive list of all you can and should do, nor will it suffice as an action plan for healing. Instead, it is intended as a starting point, a way for you to determine how much your doctor knows and cares about your ultimate health, not just medicating you. I AM ALSO NOT SUGGESTING THAT YOU WILL NEVER NEED MEDICATIONS. I AM, HOWEVER, ASSUMING THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN TRUE HEALING AND THAT WILL REQUIRE MORE THAN A MEDICATION, AND OFTEN WHEN DONE CORRECTLY, YOU CAN ESCAPE MEDICATIONS ALL TOGETHER.

If you are looking for more answers and are coming up against resistance, I would love to help you dig a little deeper and find not only more profound health, but also a level of peace and joy that you may not have felt in years.

Intuition, Inspiration and Finding the Root Cause

Like many of you, I will never forget the day when my worst fears were confirmed. That doctor’s appointment will forever be etched in my mind. After the diagnosis of Juvenile Arthritis, we spent over an hour discussing treatments and outcomes with the rheumatologist. I had so many questions & remember saying to the doctor, “SO, YOU HAVE NO GOOD NEWS TODAY?”

Like many other parents delivered this news, I fixated on the lack of answers to all of those questions & how little the doctors seemed to know.
WHY did my child develop arthritis?
Why would her immune system attack itself?
What would it take to get her into remission?
How long would that take?
If the medications have a black box warning for lymphoma, which is worse?
Why does everyone have different outcomes and respond to different treatments?
Was there any special diet that would help?

SO, essentially, this is trial and error until something works, based on their previous experience and treatment algorithms?

This was the worst news you could deliver to a mother with a Type-A personality.

The fear of what could happen, the frustration from being led astray for the last few months, and the deep pain for her and myself (if I’m honest ) spun me around like getting hit by a tidal wave. We left that appointment heads-spinning & heartbroken.

I did my best to fake the way I felt for Layla’s sake, but after I put her down for a nap, I fell apart. That went on for longer than I care to admit.

Self Love U: Listening to Your Intuition

That first appointment was unbearable, and those emotions and questions lingered for quite some time. In hindsight, I am so grateful for the racing thoughts, and although it was maddening at the time, those questions served as inspiration.

Just a few days before her scheduled appointment for joint injections, I had a thought that I couldn’t shake. What if they were wrong? What if there was something else we could do? So, I canceled her joint injections and then found two more highly regarded pediatric rheumatologists in some of the country’s best hospitals.

It was then that my background in pharmaceutical sales really paid off. After almost 15 years of being immersed in physicians’ psyche, I knew that most doctors do not have the time or drive to stay updated on current research. The fact that medical practice is typically 18 years behind medical research is unacceptable, especially when your child’s health depends on it.

THIS ONE REALIZATION CHANGED THE COURSE OF OUR LIVES, AND IT IS WHAT I WANT EVERY PARENT TO KNOW!

Doctors are human too. Although some of them LOVE what they do and spend their time reading, many operate on autopilot based on their previous experience. The medical system is so overburdened that it is hard to maintain a financially successful practice, and you don’t get paid to be on the cutting edge of research. MOST PEOPLE HAVE NO CLUE THAT MEDICAL ERROR IS THE THIRD LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH!

I KNEW I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO WOULD NEVER TIRE OF LOOKING FOR THE ANSWER. I began reading and researching everything I could find about juvenile arthritis and inflammation in general while we waited for our second opinion.

Unfortunately, our second and third opinions were no better than the first. What I found was the same diagnosis and lack of answers but different recommendations. One practice recommended joint injections, the other, NSAID’s, and the third one recommended going right to methotrexate but would allow us to step into it slowly by trying the NSAID’S (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

Why did each doctor have different recommendations?

Their recommendations were based upon how their hospital practiced, what they learned in Medical School, and what they had the most experience with. So, that little voice inside of me said, “If these doctors don’t know about these other modalities, of course they won’t approve- they have no data or experience to base it off of. What if we are on the cutting edge?”

By then, we had already started implementing many of the things I had learned through exhaustive research, and Layla was getting better. Her bad days were far less, and she was finally walking without a limp. I was eager to review her labs on her next visit. Despite my hopeful feeling about this appointment, it was at this visit that her doctor admonished me for not listening to what she had instructed and lectured me on what would happen to Layla if I continued not to follow her instructions (high dose NSAID’s).

She told me, “I have never witnessed a child that presents the way Layla does (polyarticular JIA) get better without methotrexate and they usually need more than that.” Then she laid out what would happen to Layla if I didn’t follow her treatment plan. All of this lecturing and she still had not reviewed Layla’s most recent lab work.
Admittedly, I was beyond annoyed and asked her to review the blood work because I was the one who watched this child’s every move daily, and I knew she was getting better.

The blood work indicated that Layla’s SED rate (a general inflammation marker) had dropped to a normal level. However, this was how my conversation proceeded:

Dr.- “Children don’t always have a positive SED rate with JIA.”
Me – “Yes, but this child did & it continues to drop with every round of blood work.”
Dr.- “No, actually it’s fluctuating” – checking her chart to find the last few.
Me- “Actually, No! It was 55, 37, 28, and now 10.”

She then launched into her speech again about my negligence and what was going to happen to Layla. Although I was scared, it was at that point that I knew we would never see this doctor again.

Each Rheumatology appointment set off a cascade of emotions, made me question myself, filled me with fear and doubt, and sent me right back to day one. Thankfully, my husband and family reinforced my beliefs and Layla’s progress encouraged me to keep going.

It took me a few days of reflection, but I thought it was important to call and explain why we would never be back.

“ANY DOCTOR THAT CAN DELIVER THE NEWS OF AN AUTOIMMUNE DISORDER TO A 2 -YEAR-OLD AND NOT BE WILLING TO CELEBRATE THE WINS, REGARDLESS OF THE METHOD, CAN NEVER BE OUR DOCTOR”.

This was just the beginning of the roller coaster ride that was our journey, but I know that there are so many families living this right now.

Many of you ask yourself the same questions I did and are also admonished for trying to seek a healthier way.

The truth is there is so much about the human body and human potential that we are just now finding out and so much that we do not yet know. THE SCIENCE IS NOT SETTLED. Instead, it continues to evolve and unfold. The recent research around the microbiome is not something all doctors are trained in (especially your allopathic physician), nor is nutrition. A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF THESE TWO TOPICS IS NECESSARY TO REVERSE DISEASE, so if you are seeing a doctor who is disregarding these areas, you should keep looking. Just because you are visiting a DOCTOR, this does not mean that he or she is all-knowing. The most important thing you can find in a physician is an open mind and an insatiable curiosity; these traits make Functional Medicine so appealing! Many things separate Functional Medicine from Allopathy; however, the fact that Functional Medicine focuses on finding the root cause instead of treating symptoms makes it one of my chosen methods of healthcare. Any mother of a child with a chronic illness has spent far too many hours wondering and asking “WHY,” often with no answer. Now, I have those answers and so much more.

If you are dealing with a chronic illness and are unfamiliar with Functional Medicine, Holistic Medicine, Integrative Medicine, Naturopathy, and Energetic Healing, NOW IS THE TIME TO DO SOME RESEARCH because NO ONE WILL CARE AS MUCH AS YOU DO! Trust your intuition, ask lots of questions, and NEVER base your plan on one opinion. This journey may take tenacity, curiosity, and an uncompromising will, but I promise your due diligence will pay off, and your family’s quest for true health will finally be within reach.

The New Stress of Motherhood & Finding Joy

We are at such a pivotal time in history in regards to our mental and physical health. THE DEMANDS OF MOTHERHOOD ARE ALREADY SO ENORMOUS! SIMULTANEOUSLY OUR CHILDREN ARE BEING DIAGNOSED WITH CHRONIC ILLNESSES AT AN UNPRECEDENTED RATE. EVEN WHEN SEEKING OUR PHYSICIANS’ HELP, THERE ARE GAPS IN TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSIS, LEAVING MOTHERS STRESSED, EXHAUSTED, AND TRAPPED IN A CYCLE OF FEAR.

Motherhood has become more of a race than a blessing and is beyond what any woman could keep up with. Suddenly, moms are expected to be CEOs, caretakers, organic chefs, world-class photographers, social planners, doctors, coaches, and teachers. Oh, and make sure to post pictures of the whole family looking so happy!

WE HAVE BEEN PULLED IN SO MANY DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. HOW COULD WE NOT BE STRESSED, IRRITABLE, AND OVERWHELMED? IN THE PURSUIT OF RAISING HEALTHY, HAPPY, “SUCCESSFUL” KIDS, MANY OF US HAVE LOST THOSE THINGS IN OURSELVES.

WE WORRY ABOUT THE HEALTH OF OUR FAMILIES AND WONDER IF OUR FEARS ARE PARANOIA OR INTUITION. MANY OF US HAVE BEGUN TO QUESTION OUR PEDIATRICIANS BUT ARE UNSURE WHERE ELSE TO TURN, WHAT INFORMATION IS ACCURATE & HOW TO BEST HELP OUR CHILDREN THRIVE WITHOUT BEING OVERWHELMED. THIS DILEMMA IS REAL FOR MOST MOTHERS, BUT WHEN YOU ADD A FULL-TIME JOB AND A “SCARY” DIAGNOSIS, THE DEMANDS INCREASE EXPONENTIALLY.

However, WE CAN get off this wheel! I know this because I am this mom, I too was already overwhelmed before the diagnosis. As a true A-type, I was always striving for perfection, racing from one thing to another (mentally and physically), and beating myself up whenever I didn’t meet my insane standards. When I fell short of my goals, I would push myself harder. All the while, not realizing my contribution to this extreme level of stress.

IT TOOK A HEALTH CRISIS FOR OUR FAMILY TO REORGANIZE OUR PRIORITIES AND STRIP AWAY ANYTHING THAT WAS NO LONGER CRITICAL. Like us, many families that have reversed chronic illnesses have become immersed in this restructuring through necessity. THIS JOURNEY, ALTHOUGH NEVER EASY, CAN HAVE A MIRACULOUS EFFECT. WHEN FULLY COMMITTED, THOSE INVOLVED EMERGE HEALTHIER, STRONGER, SMARTER, AND HAPPIER WITH A LEVEL OF PEACE AND GRATITUDE THEY NEVER KNEW POSSIBLE.

Regardless of the current state of health of your family, when it comes to our children, LOVE is what unifies parents—the desire to give them or help them create a beautiful life. In this striving, our children are learning to mirror our behaviors. Although the stress we feel is out of “love and concern” (& our fears), it is still stress. We are inadvertently teaching our kids; happiness resides outside of us and is influenced by our surroundings and what “happens to us.” TO FREE THEM OF THIS BURDEN, WE MUST FIRST FREE OURSELVES.

Luckily, the same tools that lead to the demise of many can be the key to ASCENDING THE NEW STRESS OF MOTHERHOOD. Instead of hours spent SCROLLING THROUGH useless distraction and entertainment, we can choose to spend that time in EDUCATION AND GROWTH. The type of change that heals generations of family trauma and limiting beliefs. To heal our families and ourselves, mind, body, and soul, we need to recognize health as the most prized possession and decide to put it before all things. Admittedly, this is not always easy and similar to any physical healing journey, it will often not happen linearly. However, it is a worthwhile endeavor and one that every family should invest in, especially if you are trying to heal a chronic illness.

I am sure there are dozens of ways to achieve the outcomes I am discussing, and I DO NOT PRETEND TO BE ALL-KNOWING. Nor am I a metaphysical or spiritual guru of any kind. In truth, I COULDN’T HAVE BEEN ANY FURTHER FROM THIS at the beginning of our journey. For this reason, I am just the person to tell you about some of these practices, because IF I CAN DO IT, ANYONE CAN!

So, how do we go about stepping off the wheel and creating joy, peace, and resilience? Regardless of our situation or health? The key to this resides in our daily habits & consistent practices.

The things that have made the most significant impact on our family and that I highly recommend to everyone are as follows:

MEDITATION- I know some of you just rolled your eyes, as I did when this was first suggested to me. Although I resisted and thought I didn’t have time and could never sit still that long, this was the most impactful change I have ever made in my entire life. This tool has had the most far-reaching effects on every aspect of my life and even those around me.

Try- A meditation program or class such as Ziva Meditation, the Chopra Center, Mindvalley, or Joe Dispenza are excellent for guided meditation. You can even quickly try one of the phone apps to start like Headspace & Calm. Using an app or a program will help you to stay consistent in the beginning when meditation feels the most cumbersome- and when you have some questions. (In the beginning, you may think you’re doing it wrong! You aren’t; it is called a meditation “practice ” for a reason. Keep at it; it will change your life!

GRATITUDE PRACTICE- We have become a society that focuses on achievements and the accumulation of goods. In this striving for more, many of us focus on where we need to go, what we need to obtain, and what is next, often forgetting to look at how far we have come or taking the time to give thanks for all of the little things we have.

Try- Start and end your day with gratitude. If you are battling a chronic illness, this can sometimes feel difficult as it is easy to focus on the pain, which makes this practice even more important. Living in the negative emotions of fear and pain are catastrophic for the immune system. Every day, find things you are grateful for, and as you focus on these things, allow yourself to become deeply immersed in the images and emotions of them until it brings a smile to your face.

CONSCIOUS PARENTING – Parenting is the most challenging job on the planet, and many of us have not had any previous training. With the level of stress and the demands in our lives, it is no wonder we struggle to be the calm, content parents we dreamed we would be.

“You’re making it hard for me to be the parent I always dreamed I would be.” LOL

We have learned through this journey how important emotions are in the healing process. Holding space for our little ones when their emotions overcome them is a skill, not an innate ability, and the more we work on it, the better we get.

Try- During your drive to work or in headphones while cleaning up around the house, listen to an audiobook by Shefali Tsabury, Laura Markham, or Carol Tuttle. Another great resource is Afineparent.com, where many of these teachings are condensed. Mindvalley.com also has masterclasses on conscious parenting.

SUMMITS- If you are also dealing with a health issue for yourself or a family member, the internet is a fantastic resource. However, you need to know where to look for the information. There are so many Summits available on many different topics. When you sign up for some, you will get more invitations.

Try- Start by Following some of these trailblazers. Use any form of communication you prefer- Instagram, Facebook, or Email. You can also purchase any one of their Summits, which are an excellent value for an enormous amount of information on children’s health and healing. Carla Atherton (The Healthy Family Formula) has done FOUR summits, all on children’s health & was the first person ever to have done so for kids. The last one was specifically for chronic illness.

Elisa Song (Healthy Kids, Happy Kids) is a holistic pediatrician and a wealth of knowledge. She did the Thriving Child Summit and continues to do Facebook , and Instagram Lives.
